SF Underground Farmers Market This Saturday

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

You know you want this.

Um.  There will be beef jerky here.

If, for some inconceivable reason, you need more convincing than that to go to the third installment of the SF Underground Farmers Market on Saturday night, how ’bout I  add pulled pork, fried chicken and andouille sausage gumbo, foccacia, homemade fresh ginger beer, Hawaiian baked goods, wild boar belly buns, Parisian macaroons, and dark chocolate almond date balls?  Yeah, I thought so.

The great idea behind the SF Underground Farmers Market is to create a place where local chefs can meet with the public to share their homemade dishes, but don’t have a commercial kitchen through which to do it (or approval from the health department, hence the exciting, dangerous-sounding “underground” label).  The last market was so popular that this weekend, it will be held in a much larger space and feature over 40 vendors.  My stomach is getting girthier just thinking about it.

In addition to the food, there will also be a workshop on how to grow mushrooms (no, not THOSE kind) in your home and live music by Beatbeat Whisper.

The market is FREE to attend, though you’ll want to bring some cash to try out some of the cheap eats.  The only catch is that to get in, you have to register here f0r a FREE membership to the SF Underground Farmers Market.  Basically, they just want your name, E-mail address and the promise that you’re a cognizant enough human being to understand you’ll be eating stuff that was made somewhere not okayed by the folks at the health department, like someone’s apartment kitchen in the Mission.  Which is what most of us do every night anyway.  And hey, if I’m still alive after countless invocations of the “five-second rule,” greedy, gluttonous asshole that I am, I’m pretty sure we’ll all survive this event.

Christy Jovanelly - Cheapskate Commentator

When Christy announced she was leaving her family's Southern California home and moving to San Francisco, her mom said, "Have fun in that den of sin." This is the only (however sarcastic) advice Christy has ever taken from her mom, who also told her to join eharmony.com and cover her eyes during sex scenes in movies. Christy puts her creative writing degree to good use by locating the typos on Chinese food menus and spends most of her time challenging friends to all-you-can-eat contests and trying to get that one bartender at Zeitgeist to smile.
