I’m not the biggest fan of made up neighborhoods. Historically speaking, whenever a “neighborhood” is pieced off from an existing one and then given a new name, it has always been done by real estate people and developers. They pimp a part of a neighborhood in order to line their pockets and dissociate it from the people that are already living there.
Take “Nopa” (North of the Pan Handle) for example, it became a neighborhood when realtors decided that “Western Addition” sounded too black. Then there’s the new “SoCha” (South of Caesar Chavez), which is being touted by a devleopment firm who just built a humongous mixed use condo complex in the area. I guess “Outer Mission” sounded just a little too much like Mariachi music to them. But to me the stupidest one is Nolita (North of Little Italy) in NYC, which is literally eight square blocks designated as such so that property owners could jack up the rent on all the local boutiques. Doesn’t Nolita just sound like a place you wanna shop? Little Italy must have just sounded like swarthy meatballs or something.
Anyways, the folks over at the Bold Italic have now dubbed the stretch of Folsom Street between 7th and 8th Streets “FolSoMa”. They are doing this to celebrate one of their favorite “micro-hoods”. While I’m all for celebrating, and I’m certainly all for the FREE beer and cheap food that’s gonna be there, don’t be surprised if some Penis Wrinkle development firm gets wind of the name and starts urging people to “come live the FolSoMa lifestyle.” How horrible would it be if ten years from now that stretch would be devoid of leather daddies and full of Nimby ass people with strollers complaining about the Folsom Street Fair. I’m just saying….
That being said, this whole event does sound like fun. There’s gonna be food carts, FREE beer, burlesque, cheap wine, and tons of cool stuff on sale. You can find all the information that I don’t feel like cutting and pasting over at the Bold Italic.
Personally, I’m gonna hang out in BasLivRoom (Broke-Ass Stuart’s Living Room), drink a beer in my underwear, and work on my new book.
