A Very Happy Hour at 800 Larkin

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Let me preface this post by saying that I never go to the Tenderloin after sundown. I’m scared of it, okay? I just know I’m gonna be that dumb bitch that gets chased down and  stabbed in the ass by a homeless guy after refusing him money (my coworker told me it’s happened before so don’t laugh.)  Needless to say, I was more than a little apprehensive when Broke-Ass Stuart suggested some of the SF writers meet up for drinks at the TL’s 800 Larkin.

I'm obsessed with the fact that this is the main photo on their Yelp business page.

However, I was pleasantly surprised when I worked up the courage to get over to the bar (sans stab wound!) There’s a pool table and smoking area, the décor is kind of swanky, the bartenders are wonderful, and '“ most importantly '“ there are so many great drink deals. We went on Funday Munday, which meant there were $2 PBRs (among other selected beer specials), $3 glasses of wine, and 2 for 1 shots of Jameson and Fernet from 9pm-2am.

If you’re no fun on Mondays, you can check out Thursday’s 2 for 1 deal on well and call drinks from 9-10pm, Sunday’s $4 mojitos and $2 Miller High Lifes, or their daily 4-6pm happy hour that also offers up 2 for 1 deals on well and call drinks.

But wait: I’ve saved the best deal for last. During Friday’s happy hour, there is a FREE buffet! And if you get really lucky, you will see a homeless person stick his head in through the entrance door and yell things at the bar like we did on our Monday excursion. That’s like FREE dinner and a show. Take that hot girl you met in your donation-based yoga class; she’ll definitely be impressed. Plus, with all the money you’re saving, you won’t feel so bad for taking a cab from your house. Oh wait, I’m the only pussy affiliate on this site that takes a fucking cab to a Tenderloin bar so she can avoid public transportation. Please disregard.
