Broke-Ass of the Week

Broke-Ass of the Week – Crispin McCabe

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Every week we feature a different person from the community shedding a little light on their life of brokeitude.  Who knows, maybe you’ll learn something about the human spirit'probably not.

Wanna be a Broke-Ass of the Week?  Holler at us here and we’ll send you the questionnaire.

I’m still in Spain, so I don’t have much time to do a big introduction, but all I can say is that Crispin is a busy dude.  Read below to see how balances that with being a broke-ass.

Name: Crispin McCabe

Age: Dirty Thirty

Occupation: Photographer, Curator, DJ at RadioValencia.FM & proprietor of @SFitall (Booking, Management & PR)

What neighborhood do you live in?: Ugh, no man’ s land, edge of Russian Hill

What are you listening to these days?: KUSF, Sic Alps, Weekend, Lilac, Ganglians plus hella garage rock such as Nobunny, Thee Oh Sees, Shannon & the Clams, Woven Bones & Bare Wires. Basically a lot of music.

Best money saving tip: Eat at home, shop in the Sunset District and learn how to make Curry or Stir Frys.

What do you refuse to spend money on?: Expensive drinks or eating out.

Most expensive thing you’ ve ever bought: Lately my Panasonic/Leica LX-3 Wide Angle Digital Camera. Most expensive ever was my 1965 Fender Jazzmaster.

How’ d that feel?: Both felt great, thought I need to start giving the Fender some lovin’

Favorite cheap eat: La Oaxaqueña Bakery & Restaurant, best tamales I’ ve had, they cost next to nothing & they’ re big! Don’ t even let me tell you how excited I was when I discovered the Banana Leaf wrapped ones, they are huge! Besides that they’ re open late & they give me free molé if I ask nice(I think they like me).

Favorite dive bar: Hands down, Geary Club although all the money you might save on their stiff drinks might go towards dry cleaning or laundry the next day.

Best deal you’ ve ever gotten: Taking classes at City College of San Francisco that or maybe next getting free records as I’ m broke & if I like you’ re band I want to play you on the air.

Favorite free thing to do: Socialize at an art opening or take one of the available free yoga classes around town.

If you woke up a millionaire, what’ s the first thing you’ d buy?: The world a coke. Seriously, some nice camera gear, build a recording studio and a start a record label.

Despite not having money, do you still love your life?: For someone who’ s living off an average of $100 a week after rent, I usually get to see 4 or 5 great shows a week & some great art, so for that… my life is amazing.

Do you own my book?: No, but I follow you on twitter, I like your FB page and read some of the articles on your site, keeps in your sphere of influence.

Best hangover cure: Fernet

Are you a hipster?: Totes.
