Events for the Five Senses: Halloween Edition

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Wondering what to do for fun this Halloween?  Feeling a little dead inside?  Wake yourself up with a FREE Halloween-themed event for each of the 5 senses!

TASTE: At today’s Día de los Muertos-inspired Berkeley Farmers’ Market, get some delicious fruit and veggie wares, pies by Mission Pie, and Champurrado (Aztec hot chocolate) by Flacos. In case you haven’t figured out what you’re dressing up as yet, the East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse (remember how much I love that place?) will have a costume-making table. There will also be pumpkin carving contests (with prizes!) and a Sugar Skull Decorating class.

Tuesday, October 26, 2-6pm
Berkeley Farmers’ Market: Halloween/Day of the Dead
Derby St. @ MLK, Jr. Way [Berkeley]
FREE

SMELL: This might be the creepiest event that I’ve ever posted. On Thursday, the Bone Room in Berkeley is hosting Modern Undertaking 101: the Art of Embalming. Thom Marsden, a mortician from Oakland funeral home Chapel of the Chimes, will be demonstrating (WITHOUT a corpse, thank god) the art of embalming. Gross. That’s some serious next level Halloween shit. I can smell formaldehyde just thinking about it.

Thursday, October 28, 7pm
Modern Undertaking 101: the Art of Embalming
The Bone Room
1573 Solano Ave [North Berkeley]
FREE

SEE: Do you ever think, “Man, I wish I was hanging out with a bunch of annoying sixteen year-olds right now,” or “I feel like seeing a movie with actors that are so bad it makes Keanu Reeves seem Oscar-worthy”? Well, Twilight is screening for FREE at Jack London Square’s Waterfront Flicks series in Oakland. It starts at “sundown,” which according to this sunrise/sunset calendar, will be at exactly 6:16pm. Sounds like the perfect time to watch two hours of a “heartthrob” that looks like he got hit in the face with a shovel.

Thursday, October 28, 6pm-ish
Waterfront Flicks: 'œTwilight'
Broadway and Embarcadero [Oakland]
FREE

Paxton Gate's Curiosities for Kids, via paxtongate.com

TOUCH: Paxton Gate is one of my favorite places in San Francisco. I know that this is not great for my vegan street cred, but I love taxidermy. And bones. And dead bugs. Although the children’s version, Paxton Gate’s Curiosities for Kids, has less of these, it’s still the perfect place for a Halloween party. This one on Saturday is for kids but you might also wanna learn how to make shrunken heads out of apples. So borrow a kid and head over there for some Halloweeny DIY crafts.

Saturday, October 30, 11am

HEAR: Horror flick director Eli Roth is putting on a 24-Hour Horror Movie Marathon. The event is a fundraiser for CELLSpace, so after you get in for FREE make sure to buy some popcorn and drinks. This event is in the HEAR category because I heard a radio commercial the other day for some new horror flick and realized that horror movies are the only genre for which you can do a RADIO commercial. Another time I thought about this is when I watched the Between Two Ferns episode where Zach Galifianakis plays an audio clip of Ben Stiller’s movie. Although it’s is unrelated to this Halloween post, you should watch it right now so scroll back up and prepare to laugh.

Saturday, October 30, starts at 12pm
24 Hour Horror Movie Marathon
2050 Bryant @ 18th [the Mission]
FREE entry, donations appreciated!

Chloe - Pennywise Reporter

Chloe - Pennywise Reporter

Chloe's youth was split between California and Kauai, frolicking on a macadamia nut farm in the tropics and landing finally in the Bay Area. Raised by super-Jew hippies, and the youngest of three sisters, Chloe learned early the virtues of thrift, economy, and green living. To the chagrin of her parents (who hoped, of course, for a Jewish doctor or lawyer), Chloe has put her degree from UC Berkeley to great use by becoming a folk singer. As "Chloe Makes Music" she plays shows throughout SF and beyond, donning vintage frocks, selling handmade merch, and pinching pennies as she sings for her supper. Calling Berkeley home for the last six years, you can think of Chloe as the website's East Bay Correspondent, opening your eyes to the hippie-filled, tree-hugging, organic-loving, vegan-eating, but way-overlooked and awesome assets of Berkeley, Oakland, and beyond.
