Sangria on the cheap!

The beauty of sangria is that there’s so many different ways to make it and it’s totally easy to do at home with an extremely cheap bottle of wine.  But sometimes your apartment might be a tiny bit dirty and you don’t want to have friends over for drinks.  So if you’re not going to make homemade sangria (my mom’s “special punch” is almost irresistible, as I told you back in March), I rely on two tapas places you can go for this fruity concoction during happy hour that you’ll actually be able to afford.

At Mission tapas spot Picaro, the happy hour goes from 5pm – 7pm EVERY DAY and the sangria is only $2.50 a glass or $10 a carafe.  Seriously, $2.50 is barely more than an hour and a half ride on Muni.  At Lalola Bar de Tapas in Nob Hill, Tuesday through Friday you can get red or white sangria for $3 a glass from 5:30pm – 7pm (and $3 Stella on tap for non-sangria drinkers).  I’m into it.

Picaro 3120 16th St. (at Valencia) [Mission]

Christy Jovanelly - Cheapskate Commentator

When Christy announced she was leaving her family's Southern California home and moving to San Francisco, her mom said, "Have fun in that den of sin." This is the only (however sarcastic) advice Christy has ever taken from her mom, who also told her to join eharmony.com and cover her eyes during sex scenes in movies. Christy puts her creative writing degree to good use by locating the typos on Chinese food menus and spends most of her time challenging friends to all-you-can-eat contests and trying to get that one bartender at Zeitgeist to smile.
