FREE Art Exhibition at Southern Exposure This Friday

BOOM! Just boom.

One thing that really sucks about a lot of art exhibitions are that there are submission fees to enter your work for consideration — and obviously, there’s no guarantee it will be picked to show.  Artists are typically closer to broke-ass than gazillionaire on the income spectrum, so that really sucks.

This Friday, Southern Exposure is once again shitting on this expensive practice at the opening of BOOM, their 18th Entry-fee FREE Juried Exhibition, in which Northern California artists were invited to submit their creations absolutely FREE of entry fees.  Every year SOEX rolls out a theme, this year’s being “BOOM” (hence the title of the exhibit).  I can’t wait to see the 35 or so BOOM-related entries that were chosen (out of over 500!).  The ambiguity of the theme is purposeful, meant to inspire artists to interpret it in whatever way the right side of their brains see fit through the media of their choosing.  Challenge!  Also, the event itself is FREE, so you can use those last three dollars for a tall boy at the liquor store to chug as you walk to the gallery.  Just don’t forget those brown bags.  It’s the law.

Christy Jovanelly - Cheapskate Commentator

When Christy announced she was leaving her family's Southern California home and moving to San Francisco, her mom said, "Have fun in that den of sin." This is the only (however sarcastic) advice Christy has ever taken from her mom, who also told her to join eharmony.com and cover her eyes during sex scenes in movies. Christy puts her creative writing degree to good use by locating the typos on Chinese food menus and spends most of her time challenging friends to all-you-can-eat contests and trying to get that one bartender at Zeitgeist to smile.
