Best Bakery in San Francisco: Schubert's Bakery

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

A funny pattern has popped up in my life for the last couple of New Years. About a month into January, a lot of people I know get engaged. I’m not sure if this is because they’re getting knocked up in a holiday eggnog fog or if proposing when the ball drops is supposedly romantic, but it keeps happening. I’ve also found that with certain kinds of friends, there is an unspoken expectation that you are to contribute to their celebration if you want a wedding invitation. Since I group myself with the <1% of people who actually like going to weddings (hello! for the free food, open bar, and grandpas telling dirty jokes), getting this invite is very important to me.

A homemade something is the most thoughtful kind of gift, and it’s often also the cheapest. I prefer the baked goods route, but since I don’t have the wherewithal to spend my January in oven mitts, I rely on the best bakery in San Francisco: Schubert’s.

You can go into Schubert’s blindfolded, point at something, and it is guaranteed to be pretty and '“ more importantly '“ delicious. When I’ve gone in, they’ve always been super helpful in putting together something that fits my low price range. They garnish some of their cakes with a Schubert’s tag made out of candy, so once you’re out of the store, you can pluck it out, eat it, and thus destroy the only evidence that your cake is not in fact homemade and your gift is not in fact a selfish ploy to get an invite. Granted, this will leave a little blemish on your cake, but if your friend says anything, you can act mortally offended and feel vindicated when you don’t get them a gift for their actual wedding.
