Mi Pueblo Es Muy Barato!

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Did you ever think there was anything cheap in the North Bay? Sure enough, there is this amazing supermarket in San Rafael close to the canal called Mi Pueblo — it is pretty much like the Mexican Disneyland of all supermarkets. It is bigger than any Safeway I’ve ever been to, everything is brightly colored to grab your attention and the Mariachi music blasting makes you want to run down the aisles.

My friend Celise says, “Going to Mi Pueblo is like when Cartman on South Park goes to Casa Boniiita!”

You just want to dash over to the taco bar and taste samples of spicy salsas and guacamole, whiz down the chip aisle and stare at the 8,000 types of tortilla chips, and then grab a few packages of powdered Horchata on your way out. There is a deli, a bakery, a butcher, a fish-monger, and heaps of cheap Latino products. Produce is half the price of a regular supermarket and even the beer is cheaper than usual at Mi Pueblo. This place makes me proud of using my favorite Spanish word, “sup-er-mer-ca-do,” with utter pronunciation!
