Friday Night: Fillmore Art Walk

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Once again, it’s time for my street to come alive with all of the colorful characters (and not to mention outfits) that turn up on Fillmore during their bi-annual Art Walk. This Friday night, from 6 pm-midnight, Fillmore St. will be booming with art, life, music, drinks and people. Hosted by Independent Artist Week, Infin8 Sync and Meaghan Mitchell Productions, the Fillmore Art Walk invites over 60 artists to show off their talent.

From McAllister all the way up to Sutter, you can walk up Fillmore and catch live painting demos, slam poetry battles, bands playing, DJs spinning and even films playing.  The entire event is FREE, so even you can afford it. Stop in various art galleries on the street and snake some snacks and wine while admiring local artwork. Most venues will also be offering extended Happy Hour prices through out the night. For example, 1300 will have $3 beers and bubbly, $5 well drinks and 1/2 off all appetizers all night. Gussies Chicken & Waffles will have $5 drink specials, $4 “soul-gria” and $6 baskets of wings. Fat Angel Food and Libation will offer $1 off all drafts and wine and$2 off their delicious flatbreads. Jazz Clubs, including Yoshi’s, Sheeba’s, Razzela’s and the Boom Boom Room, will all have live entertainment as well.

I went to this event last year and had a blast. We started off with fancy cocktails at 1300 and made our way all the way up to the end and back. Luckily, I live right in the area so it was no problem to find my way home – although, I vaguely remember passing out in my dress on my living room floor. Nonetheless, it is a good excuse to get a bit dressed up and sashay around the historical jazz district of our city. And if you are lucky, you may even get some amazing compliments from the neighborhood men wearing three-piece suits, gold pocket watches and snazzy hats. My all-time favorite was, “What’s up Slim-der-ella?!” God, I love my neighborhood.

*If you experience any other fantastic compliments this Friday at the Fillmore Art Walk, please add them as comments below!
