Motown on Mondays at Madrone

Despite being on the hardest night of the week to roust yourself out of your cozy, crusty den of ramen and Reese’s Pieces, Madrone Art Bar’s weekly Motown on Mondays could easily become the gem of your week. It’s pretty self-explanatory: they play Motown, and they play it every Monday.

But there’s some sort of magic in the air, or at least Gladys Knight and the Pips. They play the music loud, real loud, alongside music videos with people dancing much better than you. Drinks are cool (ask for the Ike Turner and expect a shot, then a slap in the face) as well as cheap (two buck well drinks before 9), and the spot is small and sweaty. Best of all, hit at the right time, the dancing is unbelievable. Sandwiched between lots of earnest knee-to-ear jackknifers are nimble virtuosos strutting their stuff in polyester suits and/or platform heels. Expect your arms and legs to go slack, first in wonder, then joyful exhaustion. M.O.M erupts at 8 pm every Monday.

Lucy Schiller - Destitute Dispatcher

Lucy's been able to live lots of places but holds her cornfed/pie-fueled Midwestern roots most dear, maintaining too loudly and too often that the Outer Richmond is the Midwest of SF: driven through to get elsewhere and knocked around for no reason (but what other neighborhood has bison?!). You can find Lucy letting things languish in her fridge, purposefully (limoncello!) or not (yogurt...), mouthbreathing, scouring Golden Gate Park for apartment-worthy items, sleepily serving up double nonfat half-caf-half-non-caf lattes at a certain cafe, skulking in various other ones, and yelling under cover of night and costume at SF Bike Party.
