BA of the Week – Musician/Writer Diana Salier

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Every week we feature a different person from the community shedding a little light on their life of brokeitude. Who knows, maybe you’ll learn something about the human spirit — probably not.

Wanna be a Broke-Ass of the Week? Holler at us here and we’ll send you the questionnaire.

When I asked Diana what she’d like included in her intro she said, “I wrote a book of poems called wikipedia says it will pass (read it free here), I play guitar in a band called Swells, and the last thing I bought before tackling this survey was a bag of trail mix. The nuts and chocolate kind.”

And without further ado, here is Diana as our Broke-Ass of the Week.

Name: Diana Salier

Age: 24

Occupation: Musician // Writer

What neighborhood do you live in: The Mission

Best money saving tip: Threefold: Avoid muni if you can, drink drinks in the Mission, eat mexican food or pizza if you get takeout.

What do you refuse to spend money on: I’ve never felt ok with buying expensive jeans.

Most expensive thing you’ve ever bought: In recent times — my bike. I think I dropped more on that than any guitar I’ve ever had.

How’d that feel: Like sheer luck. I had a tax refund that came through at exactly the right time.

Favorite cheap eat: Arinell pizza // Atlas cafe

Favorite dive bar: Doc’s Clock // El rio

Best deal you’ve ever gotten: When I lived in LA, free laundry and food at a place called my parents’ house.

Favorite free thing to do: Play music. Ride my bike around the city and stop to read/nap somewhere by the water.

If you woke up a millionaire, what’s the first thing you’d buy: A time machine. And some new sweaters. Fall’s coming.

Despite not having money, do you still love your life: Wouldn’t that be depressing if someone said no to this question? I don’t really equate the two…

Do you own my book: Nope, not yet

Best hangover cure: Sleep. And more sleep. You might think greasy burgers and fries, but that usually = passing out in the corner booth at some diner at 3 in the afternoon.

Are you a hipster: If I say no, then I am….if I say yes then I am. I’m wearing a striped sweater right now.
