The SF Symphony is celebrating social justice, political unrest, miracles, and resurrection with legendary composer John Adams’.  The Gospel According to the Other Mary has a message built on texts and poems from feminist writers and social activists Dorothy Day, Rosario Castellanos, June Jordan, Louise Erdrich, and Primo Levi.  The Los Angeles Times called this work of Adams “the most sophisticated, majestic, and moving [music] of his career.”  The message of this opera is incredibly moving and a great performance choice for San Francisco given our current climate of social unrest and the political dissonance coming from our new “leaders” in the White House.

This telling of the familiar passion story is seen through the unique lens of Mary Magdalene and other Biblical characters depicted as emotionally complex beings, struggling within a turbulent society.

“The Gospel According to the Other Mary is a full-evening musical and dramatic Passion that time-travels between the Biblical past and the jarring realities of contemporary social and political life. The raising of Lazarus, the Crucifixion and the Resurrection intermingle with themes of drug addiction, homelessness, social protest and, ultimately, hope. It is a work that is both violent and tender.”
– Composer John Adams

One of the coolest aspects of these concerts is the “inside music” pre-concert talks with the composer John Adams and amazing musical scholars Laura Stanfield Prichard, Sarah Cahill, and Alexandra Amati-Camperi.  Arrive an hour early to discuss with the experts and artists the music’s symbolism and complexities along with how it promotes social justice.
