United Playaz Annual Gun Buy-Back

Last week I went to the annual Glide Holiday Bash. It’s hands down one of my favorite events all year because it’s an auditorium full of people who really, truly give a shit about San Francisco and the rest of the world.

While there I met Rudy Corpuz Jr. from United Playaz, an organization dedicated to helping urban youth grow up in a healthy environment that gives them the tools and self esteem to break the cycle of violence and poverty. United Playaz motto is “It takes the hood to save the hood” and many of the people involved with it are formerly incarcerated adults who don’t want to see kids make the same mistakes they did.

On December 16th from 8am-12pm, UP is teaming up with the SFPD and a number of other organizations to holding its annual Gun Buy-Back event. The tagline is “Help end the pollution and be the solution to gun violence”. The event happens at the United Playaz clubhouse at 1038 Howard St. between 6th & 7th Sts. in SoMa. Handguns fetch $100 while assault weapons get a bounty of $200. No questions are asked about the guns.

At last year’s event over 100 guns were bought back.

As we see more and more mass shootings it’s incredibly important that more of these events happen. This should be done on a national level like Australia did after it’s last mass shooting. But until we get rid of every politician that takes money from the NRA, we’re gonna have rely on amazing organizations like United Playaz to do this.

I've been called "an Underground legend": SF Chronicle , "an SF cult hero": SF Bay Guardian, and "the chief of cheap": Time Out New York, but to those familiar with my work, I'm just "that douchebag who writes books about cheap stuff and drinks a lot".
