Public Barber Salon – a Beer and a Haircut

Drinking a beer while getting your haircut is actually harder than it sounds.

Drinking a beer while getting your haircut is actually harder than it sounds.

I’ve seen my future, and it’s pretty hairless.  My dad…bald.  My mom’s dad…bald.  The great Magic 8-Ball of genetics has pretty much already foretold my destiny: Outlook Not So Good.  As a result of this, I like to try new shit with my hair every so often just because I still can.  So recently I decided that I wanted a classic, pompadour like hair cut.  While considering options of where to get it done (affordably) I remembered an email I received inviting me to check out this newish place called Public Barber Salon.

Lately, I’ve been getting my hair cut for $12 at a gay Mexican salon called Omar and Christian’s in the Mission (21st St. btw Capp and Mission Sts.).  But considering my guy doesn’t speak any English and I don’t quite know how to describe a pompadour in Spanish, I was willing to spend a little bit more to ensure that I got the cut I actually requested.  So I went to Public Barber Salon.  And I’m glad I did.

For $26, I got a great haircut and was offered a beer.  While I turned down the beverage (it was like noon and too early for me to drink), I was stoked to hear that giving clients a beer is standard procedure.  Plus it was an awesome place to hang out.  Cool art adorns the walls (they have big art shows there) and Elliott Smith emanated from the speakers.

I have a history of getting bad haircuts, so I’m really glad I found Public Barber Salon.  If I save my pennies, paying $26 every few months is worth it to make sure I’ve got good looking hair…while I still have it.
