Ticket Giveaway: A Heartbeat and a Guitar – Johnny Cash Book Release

While my favorite portrait of Johnny Cash is the painting that hangs behind the bar at Bender’s (you really need to go see it), this cover that Shepard Fairy did for Antonino D’Ambrosio’s new book A Heartbeat and a Guitar: Johnny Cash and the Making of Bitter Tears, is pretty bad ass too.

A Heartbeat…tells the astonishing and dramatic story behind Johnny Cash’s virtually unknown folk protest record Bitter Tears: Ballads of the American Indian.  At least that’s what it says verbatim in the press release that was sent to me.  The book also has 34 never before seen photos by Jim Marshall and Diana Davies.

On Thursday November 5th at the Make Out Room, D’Ambrosio and several Bay Area musicians will come together to bring this story of Cash’s most controversial album to life through readings and songs.  There will be performances by Tiny Television, Yard Sale, and Billy and Dolly.  Plus Jim motherfucking Marshall will be there as well.  I guess he’ll just be hanging out and doing whatever it is that legendary music photographers do.

So, do you wanna win a pair of tix to this awesome event?  All you gotta do is leave a comment below telling us what your favorite Johnny Cash song is.  The winner will be chosen randomly.  If you just wanna buys some tix, they are $8 and are for sale here.

25 Minutes to Go is my favorite Cash song. Great, powerful story-telling lyrics.
