Unsilent Night, a Subway Tunnel Show, and Death Bear

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

UNSILENT NIGHT

So tonight is the night for all you Christmas carolers who don’t really sing. Join Phil Kline’s annual Christmastime boombox parade from Washington Square Park to Tompkins Square Park! Each person carries a different musical part of the whole piece creating a 44-minute electronic Christmas Carol which has been described as 'œone of the most moving, profound participatory art projects'ever witnessed.' Bring your own speakers and boomboxes (or show up early to borrow some) and cassettes and CDs will be available. Or get online now and download an mp3 and play it on an iPod or whatever. The Village Voice describes UNSILENT NIGHT as “a marvelously fluid, traveling spatial sound sculpture that disintegrates and reforms at nearly every stop light.' Time Out calls the event “an electro-happening” and depicts the music as “a winter wonderland of shimmering sleigh bells, chimes and grand chorales.” You know you want in.

DEATH BEAR

So this sounds really strange'. But who knows, you might really need this right now:

'œWe all have someone or something we would rather just forget. Things fall apart. Love hurts. Dreams die. But when you summon Death Bear to your door, you can rest assured that help has come. At first you may be intimidated by his stature and color (7 feet tall with a hard, black bear head, black jumpsuit, and black boots), but absorbing the memories of others is a dark art, and Death Bear must present himself appropriately for this solemn duty. Death Bear will take things from you that trigger painful memories and stow them away in his cave where they will remain forever allowing you to move on with your life. Give him an ex’s clothes, old photos, mementos, letters, etc. Death Bear is here to assist you in your time of tragedy, heartbreak, and loss. Let Death Bear help you, and absorb your pain into his cave.'

Now pass it on.

Danielle Levanas - Bargain Soul Huntress

Danielle Levanas - Bargain Soul Huntress

Danielle was raised by a pack of coyotes in the Los Angeles hills. Since arriving in NY in 2001, she has had any number of strange jobs, including back-up singing for JELVIS (the Jewish Elvis), starting the non-profit LYDIA, and writing political cabarets. A huge advocate for travel as a way of life, you can find her at the Brooklyn Public Library when her bank account is empty, fantasizing about where to head off to next.
