Dorkbot Meet up for Robot Enthusiasts

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

I love robots.  As an avid lover of anything SciFi, I’ve encountered many different types of robots amidst the pages of Asimov, old Jetsons reruns, and weird B-quality movies.  Take a look at some videos of robots here – dancing and falling and even playing the violin!

Oh. You asked what is dorkbot?

Dorkbot' is a group of people worldwide who sponsor grassroots gatherings of artists, engineers, scientists, inventors, and anyone working under the umbrella of electronic art.  In other words, they are 'œpeople doing strange things with electricity.'  Did I lose you?  Keep reading.

The New York branch of Dorkbot has been meeting once a month since Jan. 2001.  There are no fees, no dues, and no requirements to attend.  Dorkbot meetings are open to the curious public as well as people who identify with the creation and scientific exploration process.  So no need to have done well in chemistry.  You just gotta have an open mind and an evening to kill.

And you know what?  The Dorkbot-NYC is meeting up tomorrow night, and you are invited!  (If you feel like it, it’d be nice to bring some food or goodies to share.)

Guest presenters will be:

Steve Wang, Ed Chin, and Paul Orlando, the creators of Chatfe, an online platform that lets people have interesting voice conversations with strangers '“ as strangers.

Jie Qi on Paper Computing, the process of combining paper and unconventional materials like conductive paints, textiles and threads to create soft, crafty and open electronics.

And Rory Soloman and Marek Walczak, sharing [here][now] their open, online project that uses virtual reality as a way to explore spatial environments and how they are perceived.

This month’s Dorkbot meeting will be held at Location One in SoHo.  Go out and celebrate the limitless possibilities of the unknown, you broke dork!

Danielle Levanas - Bargain Soul Huntress

Danielle was raised by a pack of coyotes in the Los Angeles hills. Since arriving in NY in 2001, she has had any number of strange jobs, including back-up singing for JELVIS (the Jewish Elvis), starting the non-profit LYDIA, and writing political cabarets. A huge advocate for travel as a way of life, you can find her at the Brooklyn Public Library when her bank account is empty, fantasizing about where to head off to next.
