Have you ever really sat down and thought of how many times you find yourself in a '˜liminal space’?  Probably not.  A term I often heard bandied about in grad school, liminal space is one that (theoretically, physically, politically or otherwise) is neither here nor there.  It lies on the outskirts or the threshold.  It is often in flux or transition.

I maintain that as New Yorkers we get a healthy dose of liminality on a daily basis.  For example: I am often in the subway, a space that (I have made the argument) could be construed as a liminal space of transition.  I shift daily between being a member of 8 million-person community and being staggeringly (sometimes mournfully) independent.

And if someone bumps into me, momentarily I inhabit the transition between smiling at them and kicking their ass.   I believe it is living in this kind of shape shifting reality that spurs on great art.  In my case, an amazing piece my collaborator and I performed entitled '˜Are We There Yet?’ and in the case of the art world '˜Liminal Space’ curated by F(R)ICTION PROJECT.

Sundays till February 18th view an exciting show curated around this borderline concept.  Designed to be 'œa multimedia investigation of the multiplicity of marginal spaces, peripheral issues and transitional states that exist within the urban landscape,' Liminal Space is a collection of works ranging in medium from photography to stop animation.

The show is the inaugural venture in a new space called the '˜Lay Up‘ located in the (equally liminal) South side of Williamsburg.  The Lay Up promises to be an alternative space and 'œgrassroots site for collective gatherings and interdisciplinary discussion.'  Maybe it will prove to be a stop in these emerging artists’ careers as they transition to greatness.

Oh yeah, and it’s FREE.

Christine Witmer - Sparing Stringer

Christine was born and raised in the land of the Pilgrims, Plymouth, Massachusetts. She turned in her buckled shoes when she moved to NYC to attend NYU. From that esteemed University she received her BFA in theatre as well as a Master's Degree in Performance Studies in 2004.
Now an actor, writer and broke ass day-jobber, Christine juggles her many personas with the elegance of a red panda. specifically the one in the Prospect Park Zoo . . . soooooo cute! She can be found most often in her own habitat on the Northside of Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
