Your Sunday: Charms, Cyclones and Retractions

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Ah, March, you can be such a tease. You totally put out last weekend with your 70 degrees and above weather, then totally turn all frigid on us this weekend and say stuff like “I’m not ready for this”, ugh typical.  For the real hardcore  Coney enthusiasts,  be one of the first 100 to snag a free ride on the famous Cyclone roller coaster. It may not be beach weather, but I guarantee good people watching and delicious hot dogs. Or you could just have someone shake you by the shoulders vigorously for 10 minutes and get a similar effect of the ride, but seriously it is fun.

Retraction: Back in biology class, our teacher warned us of the effects of “denaturation”.  Which is essential saying that alcohol breaks down the cells in your brain and kills them. So due to extreme denauration last Sunday, I got everybody hyped for a free Vivian Girls show. I totally lied, it was posted on Brooklyn Bowl’s website last Sunday, but in fact, takes places tonight, and they will be joined by the band German Measles. Also our favorite taco place in New York,  Bushwick’s own Los Hermanos, will be serving up fish tacos to the bowling masses. See the full details here.

You may have missed out on their boozy opening party, but be sure to check out the new Brooklyn Charm Shop, located in the old Triple 5 Store space over on Bedford and 9th St in Williamsburg. Local jewelry designer, Tracie Howarth, turned the space into a crafter’s paradise complete with chains, charms, found objects, and everything else you need to make one of a kind jewelry yourself. While most of the options don’t require a serious craftsman background, she will be offering future jewelry-making classes for those who want to take a step further. Be sure to visit the website, Refinery 29, to get 25% off all purchases this weekend.

Laura S - Spendthrift Scribe

Laura S, left the "sixth borough" three years ago to settle in Brooklyn. After working at some daily rags, she now does writing on the side but still eats more Ramen then necessary. When she's not moving residences every 6 months, eating her way through every neighborhood, and trying every microbrew known to man, she is unsuccessfully rediscovering home economics. With her binging days behind her, she's now exploring new projects and rediscovering the city that she loves (although is still prone to sliding on her knees during a Prince karaoke set).
