Sweet Ups Bar in Williamsburg: As Sweet as it Used to Be?

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

The first thing that comes to mind when thinking about this bar is: “Whoa man, you’ve changed”.  So the bad news is, it’s not as cozy and secret-y as it once was in say, 2006.  But, really, the whole faux speakeasy thing has really been over for quite a while.  I guess it’s just that I thought it was a hidden gem in East Williamsburg for me and my friends.  But now that I’m over the initial shock that it’s become brighter and more game and TV-viewing oriented, I’m down with it again.

One major reason why I’m on board with them once again is that they have Movie Trivia tournaments that me and my team DOMINATES, and it feels SO GOOD.  Also, they have a re-fashioned Blackberry Bramble type drink called the Tina Fey.  It’s sweeter and not as good as a Bramble, but it sure does give you a good base for getting buzzed.

All in all, don’t expect it to be what it was, and maybe the bartender will call you Velma from Scooby Doo– but if you already have fun in your heart form the get-go, just let Jesus take the wheel, as they say.
