Awesome/Cheap Homemade Lunch Ideas

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Bringing your own lunch to work is one of the most obvious and easy ways to save money and stay healthy. Unfortunately, such an act requires a level of foresight and organization that I often lack. I quickly grow weary of homemade sandwiches, I resent salads, and I’ve eaten enough canned soup at work to bloat a killer whale.

So what’s a working girl (or boy) to do? Well, you can start by trying the following quick and easy meal ideas, and while you’re at it, share your faves as well. We could all use a little help in the never ending battle for a tasty lunch!

Pita Pizzas
You start by buying a shitload of pita in hopes of making healthy pita sandwiches, but soon your alfalfa sprouts turn brown and you’re left with…a shitload of pita. The solution: buy a jar of pizza sauce, some shredded cheese, various other toppings of your choosing, and you’ve got yourself a microwavable pizza delight!

Steam Stuff
Part of the difficulty of cooking at work is lack of heating implements. Microwaves and toaster ovens are great, but are limited in what they can do to food. Buy a cheap microwave steaming vessel or in a pinch, cover a bowl with a plate (leaving a crack for steam), add about an inch of water and nuke your steamables for 2-3 minutes.

Protein is Good
I got this idea from a desperate, lunch-seeking trip to Starbucks, but it works so SHUT UP. All of us who took eighth grade health learned that protein makes you feel full longer. Hard boil a pot of eggs at the beginning of the week, add a couple of slices of cheese, a whole-wheat mini bagel, some peanut butter and a piece of fruit and you’ve got yourself a protein pack of deliciousness!

Bon Appetit!

Ali was born and raised in the Wholesome/Creepy capital of the world, Salt Lake City, UT. Once she was old enough to blow that pop stand she escaped to the place that was the anti-SLC: The Peoples Gay-public of Drugifornia aka San Francisco (holla 30 Rock!). You can now find her throughout this glorious city slurping Pho and scheming with her best friend Pinky doing what they do every night; try and take over the world.
