Super Cheap Irish Coffee Happy Hour at Gold Dust Lounge

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Commence happy hour cheapness NOW!

A while ago Monica gave you some inside information about the best spots to pick up tourists if you’re feeling a little, um, sensuous.  One of these places is Gold Dust Lounge located on Powell Street, smack in the middle of one of the most tourist-y spots in the city.  But this weekend while showing family around, I re-experienced the joys of Gold Dust’s cheap, amazing happy hour.

I love this place, and not only because of the Sistine Chapel-esque painting on the ceiling (a little stretch, but stay with me).  True, there are many tourists that frequent this bar (which could be good if you, like Monica, are trolling for some lovin’), but there are also regulars I’ve seen here many a time, making it a little more legit.

But wait — let me tell you about this happy hour of theirs.  It lasts til 8:30pm and for $3.50, you can get your pretty little self an Irish coffee, glass of champagne or margarita.  And just like any good tourist-yet-dive-bar, these drinks aren’t for the faint of heart.  I personally lean toward the margaritas, but that’s only because whiskey turns me into a stumbling, vomiting mess.  Tequila is safer.  God, I just realized how ridiculous that sounds.

Anyway, whether you’re picking up tourists, chatting up the grandpa knocking back the Irish coffees, showing your family around the city or killing some time between shopping sprees, Gold Dust Lounge is there for you with their cheap, strong drinks — at least until 8:30.

When Christy announced she was leaving her family's Southern California home and moving to San Francisco, her mom said, "Have fun in that den of sin." This is the only (however sarcastic) advice Christy has ever taken from her mom, who also told her to join and cover her eyes during sex scenes in movies. Christy puts her creative writing degree to good use by locating the typos on Chinese food menus and spends most of her time challenging friends to all-you-can-eat contests and trying to get that one bartender at Zeitgeist to smile.
