Lookin’ Lovely: Back To School Looks, Part Two!

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

This week’s fashion column and back to school look is a toast to an obsession that has swept the nation with it’s booze hound attitude, intoxicating aesthetic and it’s smart and curvy women. Mad Men, which is currently in its 4th season, is a cultural force that is ironically influencing many areas of media, including fashion. Though we may still have pop singers that dress in torn up fishnet stockings and 10 inch heels, the early 60’s have made a huge comeback and influence on this season’s trends. This is often one of the most requested looks at my work, because who doesn’t want to look like a sexy pinup disguised as a tease? Thought so.

For this look, I really tried to keep it classic with a few updates in order to bring the look into 2010. The hemlines and the detailing is all modern while the look remains trim and put together. The most this look will cost you is about $150 — a steal considering that different reproductive clothing labels, like Stop Staring, price their frocks at as much if not more than that! (If you are looking for a splurge, definitely hit the Stop Staring site. If not, I advise you ignore said link before you put yourself in another year of debt.)

daring damsel for fall.

I love the way the classic sailor blue works in this dress. You can also dress up the center piece differently in Spring for a nautical look — two for the price of one! This look is also all about how you accessorize, as well as style. Pull up your hair into a bun or a french twist to give your outfit the right amount of polish, and break out the red lipstick. Take your time finding the right red — it’s not that you can’t wear it, you just haven’t found the right one! Spanx are a must for this look, since clean lines make everything look proper. Also, who doesn’t drink while they’re getting ready? Am I the only one?

Whether you wear this to school, on a date or to a Sunday night Mad Men party, you’re bound to get compliments and whistles wherever you go. If you already do, well then clearly you’re doing something right. Stay tuned next week for the final look of the back to school series!

Monica Miller - The Intern

Ms. Miller was born in San Diego, CA to one lesbian mother and one
righteous, cheap father. Currently, she is enrolled at San Francisco
State University for a B.A. in Journalism and the approximate
completion date is around 2015. She has worked for many papers in the
Bay Area, including the Oakland Tribune and the San Mateo Country
Times and is currently the city editor at one of the most
underappreciated publications in SF, the Golden Gate [X]press. Though
she may find bargains aplenty, it only stems from the necessity of
never landing an actual job and working for hacks [like Stuart.] With
intelligence, style, poise, bite, and honesty, she will rip your heart
out; but not before writing some awesome, poignant shit. This year,
she is looking forward to bigger and better things such as: trying to
get paid for a gig, actually finding a date that isn't a loser or
fucking crazy, not calling her parents when hungover and bringing you
the best of the 7x7 everyday of the week. [By the way, I wasn't
kidding about the date thing; if you love food, booze and shoegaze,
get at me.]
