What You Wish You Could Have Told Young You
Dan Savage recently printed a letter from a reader mourning the suicide of Billy Lucas and was at a loss for what to do about isolated gay teenagers in unsupportive and even abusive communities. Savage responded by starting the “It Gets Better” project on Youtube to reach out over the internet and let young people know that although it seems like it when you are in it, life is not just high school.
“If you’re gay or lesbian or bi or trans and you’ve ever read about a kid like Billy Lucas and thought, “Fuck, I wish I could’ve told him that it gets better,” this is your chance. We can’t help Billy, but there are lots of other Billys out there'”other despairing LGBT kids who are being bullied and harassed, kids who don’t think they have a future'”and we can help them. They need to know that it gets better. Submit a video. Give them hope.”
For San Francisco locals, there is a group video being organized today at 1PM at Castro Plaza. For more information, see the Facebook event page, “Record a message for Dan Savage’s ‘It Gets Better’ Project.”
Finally, the internet is being used for some good.
