Though not the only one ladling things out of a stockpot these days, the woman known as the “Soup Lady” has probably embraced the temperament of the times more than other ambulant vendors given that she actually gives away the stuff for free.

The back story is winding, but it would seem the the Soup Lady’s journey  was born out of the disaster of Hurricane Charley.  Regardless, somehow that led her to San Francisco with idea to push around steaming pots of soup for the wayward and inebriated at night.  As Celeste says in Soapdish, “..it’s so warming.”

Though technically free, apparently she lives off donations and this vocation to warm the bellies of lower Missionites is only thing she’s got going, soyou might want to drop some tuppence in her coffers.  To narrow down her whereabouts, check in here.

Stephen's early years were spent in a boxcar overlooking downtown Los Angeles. From there he moved around the state with his family before settling under the warm blanket of smog that covers suburban Southern California. Moving around led to his inability to stay in one place for very long, but San Francisco has been reeling him back in with its siren song since 1999.
By trade he pours booze, but likes to think he can write and does so occasionally for the SF Bay Guardian, Bold Italic and 7x7. He also likes to enjoy time spent in old eateries, bars and businesses that, by most standards, would have been condemned a long time ago.
