An Old Fashioned Oasis at the Bowery Hotel
Inspired by my fellow broke-ass Ashley’s post on “How to Feel Rich” in New York, I recently took a friend visiting from out of town to the Bowery Hotel. Granted I’ll probably never see the inside of their opulent rooms, but I can avoid looking like a complete schlub some days and throw one back with the rest of refined society. A mix of Victorian parlor and gentleman’s smoking den, it feels like time traveling as soon as you enter. With plush sofas and a carved wood interior, it’s easy to lose track of time and $$$ after settling into your nook.
As soon as we arrived, I spotted a woman casually sporting a red tuxedo jacket, a kilt and a bolo tie and knew I was in the right place. Sure the drinks aren’t cheap, but after a while, I need a break from the usual Big Buck Hunter and taxidermy combo. Other luxurious amenities include ironed out newspapers hanging from a rack for your perusal, and a crackling fire in the winter. Yes, sometimes it is fun to play pretend. All the scenario was missing was some jodhpurs and a trusty greyhound at my side.
This is the perfect spot to impress a date, any anti-New York family members and basically anyone who doesn’t have a English country home of their own. Sure, they will politely “ask” you to move from the couches to the bar if it gets too crowded and you’re not actually staying in the hotel, but every dream scenario must have its kick.
