Haig’s: An Inner Richmond Delicacy

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Old school.  Cheap.  Delicious.  Haig’s Deli has been serving up delicious, affordable Mediterranean food for decades.  Their food is so good, in fact, that it is sold in stores all over the Bay.

Perhaps I’m partial to Haig’s because it’s only four blocks from my apartment.  In reality, though, Haig’s is great because their food is some of the cheapest and tastiest around.  As is par for the course on most Mediterranean menus, Haig’s offers falafels, dolmas, and (I’ll be damned if it’s not) some of the tastiest hummus around.  Somewhere along the line of serving their family recipes, it was decided to add a more traditional deli element in the form of the sandwich.  Their pastrami and swiss on sourdough is the best in the city.  Check it out for yourself.  The best part, aside from the taste, is that everything on the menu hovers around six bucks.  For the portion sizes, that’s a price that won’t break the bank.

In addition to their Mediterranean delicacies and traditional sandos, Haig’s also sells everything from sweets to exotic teas, coffees, and spices.  Just taking a look at everything they sell is an experience all its own.

If Haig’s isn’t on your list of places at which to grab a quick bite, it should be.  Oh, and the guys behind the counter are as kind as can be.  Be cool.
