The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Looking at art and overeating are pretty much two of the finest activities in the land.  Well, you have a chance to do both for FREE this week by visiting Why Participate?, an exhibition at Flux Factory in Long Island City.  A group showing by artists who are concerned with collaborative, participatory art in places outside of the traditional museum or gallery, Why Participate? includes works and performances by dancers, hackers, protesters, and reality TV stars.  Intrigued by their parade of cuckoo “artists”?  Well, add yourself to the list, as there will also be interactive activities like video games and a participatory project which allows visitors to become “architects” and create temporary living spaces within the gallery.

Performance art and video games not enough for you? Attend Flux Factory’s Flux Thursday potluck– this Thursday, August 11th at 8pm.  Brings drinks or some other treat, indulge, and then head into the gallery around 9:30pm to watch some performances and hobnob with artists.  Besides whatever you bring for the potluck, the rest is FREE.  Get off the computer– go fill your belly and make a new friend, why don’t you?  All of the info for Thursday’s potluck is available HERE.

Whether you’re looking for a deep lecture, a dance performance, or something tasty, Flux Factory seems to be the place to be this week.  Still asking yourself, “why participate?”  I mean, did you miss my opening line about the wonders of art and food or something?  Duh, fool– get over to Long Island City, post haste.
