FREE Outdoor Fun at the Golden Gate Park Disc Golf Course
As a kid that grew up in Marin and went to college in Santa Cruz I have probably been exposed to more disc golf than most. In fact at one point in college I considered making a run at qualifying for the PDGA yes that does in fact stand for Professional Disc Golf Association. While my professional aspirations have since been quelled I do still enjoy the occasional round of disc golf and we San Franciscans are very fortunate to have an amazing course right in Golden Gate Park.
I first played this course in the mid 2000’s and it was certainly enjoyable but lacked the maintenance and organization of some of the better funded courses in the bay area. Having recently moved to the city and living just a short walk away I returned to the course this weekend, with a bag of discs, a disc golf rookie and memories of a somewhat lackluster course. Much to my delight the course has undergone a recent revamp and expansion and now our premier city has a premier disc golf course to add to its list of amenities.
Now sporting a fresh 18 hole layout and newly paved tee pads this course provides a great experience for both the salty disc golf veteran and the bright-eyed newbie. The course was crowded this weekend but since most of the holes are short we never had to wait very long to tee off and when the groups in front of us needed to take a quick break for some “refreshments” they were always kind enough to let us play through.
Disc golf is most definitely a Broke-Ass friendly sport, you can pick up a disc at nearly any sports store for $5 and I’ve yet to play a course that charges anything for the privilege of playing. Do yourself a favor and get out to The Golden Gate Disc Golf Course while we still have nice weather.
