Friday Night Art Opening: Witches of Wonder

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

This Friday, October 14th, get in the mood for Halloween and Dia de Los Muertos at the launch of a spooky and intriguing art exhibit at Big Umbrella Studios on Divisidero. The show, entitled Witches of Wonder, features and all-female-line-up of talented artists with a taste for the darker side of life. A reception will be held at the gallery from 7-11 p.m. Stop by and meet the witches that get inspired for costume ideas.

The event  features So-Cal come San Francisco artist Patrushka. Her work includes the eerie Day of the JennybirdBird (left), as well as haunting images of Gwen Steffani, Courtney Love and other feminine Sugar Skull painting. Her influences derives from countless days locked up in bedroom as a confused teen blasting her stereo, drawing, coloring and reading comic books. She probably rocked the goth-schoolgirl look and snuck out of her window to go dance to the likes of the Cure in the  80s room upstairs at Club A in Tijuana every Wednesday night. She’s still feeling the dark sparkle, as you can see in her sick style.

A slew of other witches showcasing their work at BUS include: Helice Wen, Xiau-Fong Wee, Renee Castro, Holly Ellis, Eve Skylar, MJ Lindo, Tiffany Star, Tonya Van Parys, Laura Gonzalez, Sarah Woodward, Queena Hernandez, Tess X, Lila Arts, Malyssa Harelson,Leilani Bustamante.

Whether or not you are still feeling the Pagan vibes of the Harvest moon in Aries this week, or simply want to insinuate nightmares of ghosts and goblins, Witches of Wonder will do it for you. Take Pratruska’s advice, “Please make sure all you gals come and support your lady artists, and all you guys come out to get rejected by some wonderful witches!”
