The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

If you haven’t noticed, it’s October. If you’re still a little kid at heart, you’ve already bought your Halloween costume. If you love scary movies then you have marathons on TV to keep you happy. And if you like to experience these things up close you have Darkness Rising, a haunted attraction in Long Island.

Darkness Rising is brought to you by the Baird & Kennedy families. It’s the horrible love child of Kevin Baird and Jim Kennedy, two guys who both turned their own homes into haunted house attractions.

Last year, Darkness Rising was open for seven nights, attracting roughly 2000 visitors and raised thousands of dollars. The money was donated to two charities (YES Community Counseling & the Anchor Camp).

This year Jim and Kevin have managed to move their self-made haunted attraction into a new 12,000 square foot building from the Massapequa Fire Department. The money made this year will be donated to the YES Community Counseling & the Heather Pendergast Fund.

This event is open to anyone ages 10 and up for nine more nights. Tickets go for $10 and the haunts begin at 6pm.

My father came, my mother saw...and I conquered. I encourage children to do drugs, I buy alcohol for teenagers, and I drink beer with the homeless. In my spare time, I attend art galleries for the FREE booze while rubbing elbows with modish elephants. I also hammer six-inch nails into small penises. Stuart knighted me as Broke-Ass King of New York. You've been warned.
