FREE Holiday Tree-Lighting Celebration in Madison Square Park Tonight

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

The holidays are like a double-edged candy cane.  On one end, traveling, crazy family members, and the sheer cost of making the holidays “happen” can be total bummers.  On the other end, it’s really hard to not at love hot cocoa, cozy sweaters, and cuddling up with the people who don’t make you cringe.  The holidays also allow a bit of “cheeseball” spirit to fill the air– and god knows I love me some over-the-top spectacle.  Which is why I find it hard to miss out on events like today’s tree lighting, FREE in Madison Square Park.

New Yorkers like to go big, and the Madison Square Holiday Tree Lighting is no exception.  They’ll be turning up the twinkle on a 30 foot tall Christmas tree, accompanied by live music, and a shitload of other lights and decorations to ogle.  I mean, yeah, there will likely be tons of children present, but come on– how can that lump of coal in your chest not turn into a loving, pulsating heart for a tradition like this?  The holidays are all about this cheesy stuff, you guys!

Madison Square Park was the site of the first public holiday tree, 99 years ago.  Stop being a grinch and go hold hands and sing carols underneath a giant, blindingly sparkly evergreen.  It’s historical, and good for your soul.
