Broke-Ass Mom Must Haves

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

I’m smelling a slight stench coming from the direction of my armpits, and I suddenly realize that it’s not my son’s dirty diaper, or some food gone bad that might be lodged in our couch, it’s my sweatshirt.  I’ve worn it five days in a row now.  I can’t help it, though.  I know it’s embarrassing, and cliché for a SAHM to be wearing the same clothes over and over, but I am at least changing my underwear regularly.

All of this got me thinking.  If a Broke-Ass Mom was taking a trip on an airplane, and the airlines lost my luggage, what could I survive with for five days?  Below is my list of must-haves, what are yours?

  1. Columbia pullover sweatshirt
  2. Yoga pants
  3. Smart Wool REI socks
  4. Keen Sneakers
  5. One rubberband for my hair
  6. (A bottle of Vodka would be nice, but not a must have)

I haven’t included things like underwear, change of socks, bras, or a toothbrush, because quite honestly I could get by without these things for a few days and still survive.  But the above list of clothing, these are my go-go clothes that I have absolutely come to love in my SAHM days.

Jennifer has been a bit of a nomad having lived in seven different cities. Her life as a gypsy has settled down for the moment in San Francisco with her husband and two-year old son. Recently, she decided to throw caution to the wind, quit her job as an analyst to be a full-time mom while chasing her dreams (and the Pulitzer Prize). When she's not writing, she's aspiring to be a luddite (although blogging isn't helping), knitting the occasional hat, or running in the park with her son and his secondhand compost truck in tow.
