Happy Birthday, Broke-Ass Mom
Coincidentally, after talking about my Broke-Ass birthday coming up, another Broke-Ass mom friend of mine (Yes, that’s right folks, I finally made a “mom friend”) had her birthday last week. Of course, I had to ask her what she did on her birthday. She should be proud; it’s quite Broke-Ass-ish.
She went to Ross to spend a gift card she had been hoarding since Christmas. The real Broke-Ass part of this is that she thought she only had $8 come to find out at the register that she had $80. So she went back for four more shirts, and a few pants.
Next she took a movie pass she got on her birthday last year and went to see the new “Bully” movie by herself. Now, I’m sorry, but for some reason I think one of the true signs of being a Broke-Ass mom is your willingness to do things on your own. Not only are you willing, but sometimes you even prefer it. Because when you’re Broke-Ass you have to know how to fend for yourself.
That was it for her birthday, and that took almost a full eight hours. Eight hours that she usually spends entertaining her three-year-old daughter, but for her birthday she got a free pass (quite a few of them, I might add). She told her husband WELL in advance that this is what she wanted, and by God, she got it.
Me, on the other hand, I’m still working on what I want for my birthday. I did, however, decide that I would allow my aunt to give me money for the half-marathon. The gym membership, strangely, felt like more commitment than training and completing a half marathon. And dinner, well, that actually would have been my first choice, but apparently no one wants to give me that.
So I guess that’s what this Broke-Ass Mom wants for her birthday – all the things I want but can’t afford.
