The Eagle is Back! Sunday Beer Bust Returns Today!

SF Eagle Outside

Why you wasting time outside? Get it!

Well, it’s been a long haul and one that often did not look promising, but a city tradition has returned. The Eagle is back, and with it the Sunday beer bust.

Although it was always year round, the beer bust returning at the beginning of the spring makes all feel right in the world. In a city that has deftly marketed oft- inclement weather as an asset, those of us that live here and not in balmy Ghirardelli Chocolate square commercials, cling to bars that feature semi-insulated patios like our threadbare hoodies, furthering the delusion that the convulsive shivering we experienced on the walk over is normal. The Eagle was part of a Sunday afternoon line-up unparalleled. Sure, we were left with the rest of the pantheon,  Zeitgeist, El Río, The Ramp, etc., but it hasn’t been the same without it. Although El Río did muster hosting a generous and reasonable facsimile during The Eagle’s two year exile

Mostly this bar opening, in a year of so many, became important because in a very public way, we in the queer community were reminded that if we got angry, involved and made ourselves heard, that things can change.   Many, many are responsible for it both behind the scenes and out front. For these people and their non-stop work, we should be very grateful. Especially because, when two more queer spaces are closing their doors up the street, that there is still one, one that was ground zero for so much history and activism, surviving to open once again and pull out the stopper is the tide change we need.

So, strap on your jackboots or sneakers, harness or t-shirt and glug some brew (or soda) and inhale some tacos (or armpits) to your hearts delight in the company of so many of the city’s best.  Granted, it may not be exactly the same as we remember, but I’m sure, with a little spit n’ polish, it’ll acquire a similar “patina” in no time.

Welcome back guys! Abrazo.

Stephen's early years were spent in a boxcar overlooking downtown Los Angeles. From there he moved around the state with his family before settling under the warm blanket of smog that covers suburban Southern California. Moving around led to his inability to stay in one place for very long, but San Francisco has been reeling him back in with its siren song since 1999.
By trade he pours booze, but likes to think he can write and does so occasionally for the SF Bay Guardian, Bold Italic and 7x7. He also likes to enjoy time spent in old eateries, bars and businesses that, by most standards, would have been condemned a long time ago.
