sunday streets

Of all her gowns, San Francisco, looks her most enchanting, perhaps in the early days of autumn. The days of the Indian summer are dry and hot, but cool to nights perfect for t-shirts that we never get during the “real summer” everyone else experiences.

The city turns into a circus no matter how slow an election year and there is street fair, after street fair, drawing the happy people out into the languid sunshine a few more times before the days darken towards January and the icy winds blow in off the Pacific.

This Sunday shall be no less fantastic as Sunday Streets ends it’s season of pedestrian filled boulevards, food stalls, bicycles and zumba pop ups. It’s only fitting that it should end in the Mission as this is really the neighbourhood’s best season: paletas in the park, back staircase cookouts, and dusky walks scented with the last blooms of jasmine.

Perhaps, if only for the day, Valencia will resemble the thoroughfare we once knew: artists, anarchists, families, homies, queers, straights, punks, babies, doggies and stumblies. Even your favourite future mayor and his band of ragtag writers will be there to get out the vote and glad-hand the good populace.

Put on your Sunday clothes, there’s lots of world out there guey!  Strap on those chanclas and come down and say hi!

Make sure to visit the campaign tables while you’re there. Stuart and crew will be at Valencia and 22nd and you can make your own “1-2-3 to Replace Ed Lee” button. There will be tons of posters and stickers to give away too!

Stephen Torres - Threadbare-Fact Finder (Editor, San Francisco)

Stephen's early years were spent in a boxcar overlooking downtown Los Angeles. From there he moved around the state with his family before settling under the warm blanket of smog that covers suburban Southern California. Moving around led to his inability to stay in one place for very long, but San Francisco has been reeling him back in with its siren song since 1999.
By trade he pours booze, but likes to think he can write and does so occasionally for the SF Bay Guardian, Bold Italic and 7x7. He also likes to enjoy time spent in old eateries, bars and businesses that, by most standards, would have been condemned a long time ago.
