For Her: F*ck Persky, F*ck Rape Culture

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

I’ve been staring at this screen trying to figure out the proper configuration of adjectives to show you about how I feel about the hellishly light sentence that Persky (I refuse to use his honorific title of “Judge”) meted out to Brock Turner for sexually assaulting a woman. I am pretty good with words, but I cannot even create a proper jumble of them to articulate just what I felt when I heard that Persky was concerned about how Turner would fair in clink and only gave him 6 months, of which he will likely only serve half of, because Turner is more vulnerable than his victim? I cannot even begin to tell you how much my heart aches for the woman at the heart of this horrible story whose suffering and strength were marginalized by a “judge” who sided with the attacker.

Justice is such a fucked up word right?

Needless to say, I am furious. I want to break things. But, I am older now, and tearing shit up is no longer my methodology of addressing injustice. What to do? Thankfully I am a member of a powerful secret society who know how to filter said rage into action. We are throwing a party at the beautiful Starline Social Club on Wednesday, June 15 where we will be having folks send letters requesting Persky’s resignation from office. And, naturally, in classic Bay Area tradition, altruism and dance parties go hand in hand so once you are done letting that shitbag know you’re not cool with his abomination of “justice” we will exorcise our collective demons with a dance partaaaaay. Thus, I am inviting you to please join us. Do good then dance it out – together.  I can’t wait to see you.
