Aww, Summer. A favorite time of the year, for it is socially accepted, nay, encouraged to drink outside in as little of clothing as possible. To help aid you in this glorious quest, I offer a list of some of the best patios is Oakland(ish) area to get your ass off the couch and in the sun with a cold one in your hand.

Temescal Brewery
4115 Telegraph Ave, Oakland, CA 94609

Brand spanking new brewery for your drinking pleasure! The minute you walk in you can feel that this place had nothing but love and meticulous attention to detail poured over every inch of it. The inside is intimate and you get an up close and personal with their giant beer tanks, but it’s the patio that’s the star of this place. Take a look:

There beer is unpretentious and on point and the staff (the owners and head brewer) couldn’t be sweeter.

Ale Industries

If you’re into innovative drafts and delicious beer, look no further! This tap room is located conveniently close to Fruitvale BART and outstanding taco trucks (Just a heads up on location: yes, keep driving around the blind corner toward the tracks and yes, you’re supposed to walk into that open warehouse). They converted their brewery warehouse into a pretty stellar bar and art/show room. The staff here is stellar and knowledgeable.

2nd Fridays of every month is the best time to come as it’s their live music/art/taco truck/ party night and it’s everything you can want in a summer night.

This little odd ball of a brewery is WELL worth the effort it takes to find it….which is a lot, I can tell you it is scary as fuck getting lost in the industrial area this place is situated in at night, so maybe only try to find it for the first time during the day. Goddamn, if their beers aren’t unbelievably delicious and their spot so beautiful and open.

The Half Orange

Our first non brewery on the list, but don’t worry, there is plenty of local beer and wine here and fuckin charros and crazy weird hybrid Korean food while being attached to a public market that has a Mexican bakery and fresh chili mangos in it…It’s just everything.

The outdoor sitting gives you two options. Sit under the stars and tea lights strung up everywhere or sit in your private converted garage with a TV and look out at everyone while stuffing your face with their homemade Korean fried chicken and in house made Kimchie waffles and Salchipapas.

Prizefighter
6702 Hollis St, Emeryville, CA 94608

This spot is pretty legit. They offer big ass boozy punch bowls and daily garden cocktails. It’s already an established little gem, so we can over look the fact that it’s in Emeryville. The patio isn’t huge, but there are seats inside too and the entire place is pretty, open and airy.

Drakes Dealership

Their outdoor patio, though lacking a view (besides people watching, if that’s your thing), is still one of the coolest.  Beautifully situated in the middle of their restaurant that’s built up around the patio. Drakes beer is yummy, I’m sure I don’t need to remind anyone of that, but did you know about their poutine fries with mother fuckin ‘double duck’ gravy and a goddamn confit duck leg on it???  You need to be there right now and put it in your mouth, just close your eyes and hold them in your mouth…mmmmm.

Portal-East
1611 2nd Ave, Lake Merrit Oakland, CA 94606

Patio Portal

I’m a sucker for any patio covered in trees and that’s this spot. The bar and kitchen are small and has a pretty local vibe, but the beer is cold and good and the tables outside are large and communal.

Their brunch is super good too, but just know it is a miracle if you’re able to get in during their brunch hours, so, bring a snack for the wait if you get hangry.

Lost & Found Beer Garden

lost&found

This place has me convinced Hogwarts (or Brakebills University depending on what wizarding school you’d like fantasizing about joining) it’s totally real, because there is a straight cloaking spell on this spot. Located smack dab on Telegraph in the middle of Uptown, in plain sight, but I’ll be goddamned if i can ever find it driving by or when I need to point it out to prove I wasn’t just drinking in some ally late last night.

Anyways.  This place is just fuckin cool. The patio is huge and has games! And yummy beer! And probably magical spells. come drink here!

The Heart & Dagger Saloon
504 Lake Park Ave, Oakland, CA 94610
Map

heart and dagger

Rockers and dogs, they go together like a denim vest and spikes, all of which are plentiful at the Heart & Dagger Saloon. The large shaded out door area is the perfect place to listen to the music streaming from inside and kick back with a drink or twelve with a few of your best buddies.

Cheers!

Born and raised in the bay. I'm just a tumbling weed, or something along those cliched lines. Good times adventurist. Always on the hunt for the weird and unusual, while I myself AM weird and unusual. (10 points if you get that). Currently calling home Oakland. Lovin all the art, culture, drinking and the food.
