POET graffiti tag

Written & curated by Corinne Avganim

It goes without saying, but I’ll say it anyway. Times are crazy! As a kid, I was told I was lucky – our parents had fought for our civil rights and to end the Vietnam War. All we had to do for the most part was focus on our educations and climbing that shiny capitalistic ladder on the horizon. No one told us how delicate this liberty was and before we knew it, we were living through 9-11 and a depression they cloaked as “recession.” I took to the street for the first time marching as part of the 99%, and again to demonstrate my discontent with pretty much everything Trump. The college education I was so proud of all of a sudden meant close to nothing, and the low income status I carried as a child seemed to follow me relentlessly.

In a way, I’m grateful. I never imagined myself to have to navigate these waters, but I am. I’ve become a curious, thoughtful and involved member of the human community. I don’t rant and rave on social media, but do try to contribute in a way that adds value, that hopes to relate and educate rather than blindly preach at opposition.

Since election night, I’ve felt my world shift drastically, and continuously. I find conversations generally more tense and people more easily triggered – including myself. And in deciding what to do with all of this incessant brain activity, decided to partner up with one of my favorite brains of all, (Broke-Ass) Stuart Schuffman. Together, we ask you to channel your voice in a way that adds light and understanding through the medium of poetry that we’ll then funnel into a regular feature in Arts and Culture. These poems don’t have to be super serious or political in nature…just whatever gets you going. Love your pug? That’s cool, too. Just do you.

To submit a poem to be featured here, email with your 100% original piece of work, full name, age, city, links to social media accounts, and (optional) biographical blurb.
