Taking The Emo Out Of Chemo Fundraiser — Come Out And Support This Friday!

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Kelly Malone is one crazy motherfucker. A year ago when she told me she wanted to open up a “d.i.y. school”, I thought she was crazy. Sewing? Screenprinting? Beer? Terrariums? I thought that spinster crazies and Ready Made readers were the only ones who would be interested.

But now that Workshop is booming and that the Indie Mart is bigger than ever, you can consider me a believer. After all of the awards, the parties and the acclaim, its about time we let Kelly relax and have a good time. The amount of work, thought and insanity that goes into a week at Workshop or the planning of an Indie Mart is astronomical. Even as someone who is young and spry, I still cannot comprehend just exactly how she gets it all done.

But she does. She provides a great place for all of you to drink, make out, create and party. And its about time you pay her back.

A bunch of Kelly’s closest friends are throwing a party to pay her medical bills because, as you guys know, cancer sucks. This isn’t your average fundraiser — there will be no crying, no moping, no cheesy “wind beneath my wings” moments. We’ll be doing auctions, cheap drinks, cheap thrills, DJ’s that will make you dance, live screen printing and even terrarium workshops for that metal Martha Stewart in all of us.

I’ll be there chucking drinks back with the best of them, printing t-shirt and sewing koozies. Who knows? I just might be on the auction table for a hot date in the back and, lets just say, I’m not shy. ;]

Monica Miller - The Intern

Monica Miller - The Intern

Ms. Miller was born in San Diego, CA to one lesbian mother and one
righteous, cheap father. Currently, she is enrolled at San Francisco
State University for a B.A. in Journalism and the approximate
completion date is around 2015. She has worked for many papers in the
Bay Area, including the Oakland Tribune and the San Mateo Country
Times and is currently the city editor at one of the most
underappreciated publications in SF, the Golden Gate [X]press. Though
she may find bargains aplenty, it only stems from the necessity of
never landing an actual job and working for hacks [like Stuart.] With
intelligence, style, poise, bite, and honesty, she will rip your heart
out; but not before writing some awesome, poignant shit. This year,
she is looking forward to bigger and better things such as: trying to
get paid for a gig, actually finding a date that isn't a loser or
fucking crazy, not calling her parents when hungover and bringing you
the best of the 7x7 everyday of the week. [By the way, I wasn't
kidding about the date thing; if you love food, booze and shoegaze,
get at me.]
