My So-Called Life Lessons

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

The degree to which I still identify with Angela Chase from My So-Called Life is probably something I shouldn’t post on the Internet because I’m 23 and she’s 15 and that’s really embarrassing. But honestly, who doesn’t want to travel back in time to sophomore year of high school and walk a mile in Angela’s Doc Martens? Her problems — which mainly involved decoding Jordan Catalano’s stoner speech — were so devastating and true and ultimately really appealing. Maybe if I wasn’t such a spaz in high school, I could’ve learned a thing or two from her. But there’s no point in dwelling on missed opportunities of my past; the best thing about My So-Called Life is that it’s only become more applicable to my life as I’ve grown older. In fact, I think there’s a little bit of this crimson-haired, self-deprecating, borderline obsessive stalker girl in all of us, so it might be in everyone’s best interest if we all try to learn from her neuroses. These Angelaisms can be summed up as: My So-Called Life Lessons.

Rebecca graduated from UC Santa Cruz with a degree in Literature, but she tells everyone she majored in Psychology so they don't ask her for book recommendations. She likes coffee, pickles, free yoga classes, and spends a lot of time with her dog.
