Dreamland Orchestra at Clover Club

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

When you’re newly single, have witnessed not one but two hobo-jack-offs within 4 hours, just got an awesome haircut and are meeting up with your best friend after a mutually miserable day at work, you just want to fucking chill and relax. Such was my story this very evening when, downtrodden by the quotidien brutalities of the working life my friend and I found ourselves in the nexus of the magical universe.  Clover Club on Smith Street in Carroll Gardens, as I had well known, is a beautiful and ornate cocktail lounge which just the right amount of “art direction” to create a vibe without being costumey and corny. The cocktail menu is varied and inventive without being overwhelming, or, for that matter, being cheap-cocktails run about $12 a pop-but potency-wise it’s all worth it.

Wednesdays, we were further delighted to learn, is when Michael Arenella & His Dreamland Orchestra play. A band of dapper, retardedly handsome, impeccably groomed fellows, the Orchestra “is an ensemble steeped in the hot-dance band tradition of the Jazz Age.”

After a Blackberry Fizz, a couple of songs and a comfortable seat next to my bestie under some of the most flattering lighting I’ve been featured in in months, the world seemed a much lighter, lovelier place.
