Meet Author/Cartoonist Daniel Clowes on Thursday Night!

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Boring...David Boring

So you saw Ghost World when you were 15, dyed your hair black and cut it in an unflattering, butchy bob like Thora Birch.  Then you watched Art School Confidential a couple years ago while you were, in fact, enrolled in art school and laughed sardonically at the oh-so-true irony of it all.  Finally, after meeting Rolf, the late-bloomer-turned-American-Apparel-model who never missed an opportunity to urge you to start reading graphic novels, you picked up David Boring by Daniel Clowes and fell in love.

Don’t be shy — profess this love in person on Thursday at The Booksmith!  Daniel Clowes will be speaking and signing copies of his new graphic novel, Wilson, the story of “an opinionated, middle-aged loner,” and gee, doesn’t that sound like barrels of fun?  Writer Glen David Gold (husband of Alice Sebold, duh) will be moderating the discussion, and if you’re like me, you’ll want to meet him too.  This event is totally FREE, by the way, which is the kicker.

Daniel Clowes in Conversation With Glen David Gold at The Booksmith Thursday, May 13, 7:30pm 1644 Haight Street [Upper Haight] FREE

Christy Jovanelly - Cheapskate Commentator

When Christy announced she was leaving her family's Southern California home and moving to San Francisco, her mom said, "Have fun in that den of sin." This is the only (however sarcastic) advice Christy has ever taken from her mom, who also told her to join eharmony.com and cover her eyes during sex scenes in movies. Christy puts her creative writing degree to good use by locating the typos on Chinese food menus and spends most of her time challenging friends to all-you-can-eat contests and trying to get that one bartender at Zeitgeist to smile.
