Jazz Isn’t Just For Old, Boring People at the Fillmore Jazz Festival

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Of course, this being the 4th of July holiday weekend, you know you’re about to go get pretty fucked up at least one of the days, whether you’re in the city, slutting it up in Vegas or houseboating like Gramps used to do in Shasta.  That’s why it’s pretty awesome that the FREE Fillmore Jazz Festival is happening on both Saturday and Sunday.  According to the event website, it’s the largest free jazz festival on the West Coast — consider me officially impressed.

In addition to like a million stages with fairly major players in the current jazz world, there will also be standard festival fare, like booths selling oddities such as hemp condoms and soap made from goldfish, the best turkey leg you’ll ever eat in your life, and some radio station giving away pens and bumper stickers.  There’s also lots of places for you to get your drink on, both within the festival limits and at the surrounding bars/restaurants.

Do something good for yourself this weekend and listen to some FREE live jazz!  This might be your only chance — you know you’re not paying that cover at Yoshi’s any time soon.

Fillmore Jazz Festival Saturday, July 3 & Sunday, July 4, 10am-6pm Fillmore Street (between Jackson & Eddy) FREE

Christy Jovanelly - Cheapskate Commentator

When Christy announced she was leaving her family's Southern California home and moving to San Francisco, her mom said, "Have fun in that den of sin." This is the only (however sarcastic) advice Christy has ever taken from her mom, who also told her to join eharmony.com and cover her eyes during sex scenes in movies. Christy puts her creative writing degree to good use by locating the typos on Chinese food menus and spends most of her time challenging friends to all-you-can-eat contests and trying to get that one bartender at Zeitgeist to smile.
