Bear in Heaven and Zola Jesus Play Seaport Music Festival

The Seaport Music Festival has brought attuned New Yorkers an impressive array of artists these past few weeks. The series opened up a fortnight ago with the jaunty sounds of the Apples in Stereo before transitioning during its second week to the lo-fi wonders that are Beach Fossils and Woven Bones. Week number three? Enter the drone.

The howling, Wisconsin-based solo act Zola Jesus (given name: Nika Rosa Danilova) and krautrock-tinged Brooklyn darlings Bear in Heaven create a different sort of music, specializing  in a particularly noisy brand of musicianship. Their music is large and daring, sonically dominating while somehow remaining unassertive and restrained. One can only imagine, then, how their live acts fare.

We’re going to take a chance and say pretty damn well. Zola Jesus plays prologue at 7 PM, and Bear in Heaven serves up the main course at 8 PM. DJ Mike Wolf will make an appearance as well, opening with a 6 PM set. All tonight, and all FREE.
