Forget Everything You Know About Pheobe’s Cafe

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Much has been said, both on the interwebz and via word of mouth about the service of Pheobe’s. And to that I say: well, here’s the thing. The thing is that, yes, perhaps the service at Pheobe’s can be a little….hit or miss. With the misses being things like, you know, not being paid attention to for well over 30 minutes, or forgetting things that you may have reminded them about like, maybe 2-3 times.

See, though, if you go during the day or in the evening if you want to get some work done on your laptop, or maybe just need some quiet time with your computer, reading material, a book, or whatever, and want a healthy snack or meal, Pheobe’s is nothing less than ideal. Because they pretty much leave you alone, you don’t have to feel guilty about staying there too long or taking up too much room, because it’s generally not that crowded.

As far as the food, I’m very partial to the San Juanito sandwich, a tasty vegetarian dream with avocado, tomato, sprouts, and garlic oil on ciabatta. I also love the yummy hummus platter and the mozzarella/tomato/basil grilled cheese. Though their coffee isn’t the greatest, it’s still drinkable, and the multitude of available electrical outlets more than make up for this.
