The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

We here at BAS Headquarters are always thinking of new awesome things to bring to you, our dear (and depraved) readers.  So with this in mind we’ve teamed up with the fine folks over at Drink Me Magazine to bring you a new drink recipe every week.  That way you can make yourself a little special sumptin-sumptin to aid you in your weekend wickedness.

This week’s recipe, brought to you by the very esteemed Patrick Poelvoorde, is yummy The Blackberry Crush.  Take it away Patrick!

The Weekly Drink Me Recipe: The Blackberry Crush

By Patrick Poelvoorde

As I was sitting here this morning, amidst my normal routine of drinking coffee 'with Kahlúa, I found myself pondering how much a well-made cocktail affects our mood.  Sure, it can eradicate a dismal case of the Mondays and pacify even the most high-strung air-traffic controller. But can, say, a lovingly muddled, mixed and strained libation lead to enlightenment? Let’s find out, shall we? My recipe for this week is based on a very classic cocktail, the Pimm’s Cup. Pimm’s No.1, a gin-based digestif from England that was created in 1823, was traditionally served with ginger ale and a cucumber slice in a small tankard called a No. 1 Cup (hence the brilliantly original name). My variation utilizes fresh, in-season blackberries and Square One cucumber-infused vodka to up the alcohol quotient, but you can muddle in a fresh cucumber instead to cut the cost. This cocktail will require the slightly expanded bar tool selection of a small mesh strainer and a muddler (a stick-like contraption for crushing various ingredients). But the results'”including, perhaps, a life-altering revelation that rivals a double rainbow'”are worth it.  Let’s get to drink makin’.

Blackberry Crush $3.50/drink

750 ml Square One Organic cucumber-infused vodka $30
750 ml Pimm’s No. 1 $20
Bundaberg Ginger Beer (4-pack) $5
Lemon $.30
Blackberries $3

Step 1: Muddle 4 blackberries in the bottom of a cocktail shaker by themselves, trying to extract as much juice as possible.

Step 2: Measure 1.5 oz of Square One vodka and pour into the shaker.

Step 3: Measure .75 oz of Pimm’s No. 1 and toss that right in on top.

Step 4: Add .5 oz of fresh lemon juice and add some ice.

Step 5: Shake like a Polaroid camera.

Step 6: In a Collins glass, add fresh ice and strain contents into the glass with both the cocktail strainer and the mess strainer.

Step 7: Top with ginger beer, garnish with a blackberry and repeat these steps for the remaining 16-or-so servings.

Patrick Poelvoorde - Hedonist Barkeep

Originally hailing from various hitching posts and one-horse towns
throughout the Midwest, at 20 Patrick took a leap of faith and bounded
westward. But, unlike in the movie industry, he took a wrong turn and wound up in Phoenix where he cut his teeth pouring potables to not-so-sober college students, writing for various publications and painting his little heart out. After 9 years, he found the secret exit and ended up in San Francisco, where his brain is slowly congealing back to a normal(ish) state. Perhaps you will see him stroking down the street on his bike, looking at you with that come- hither stare or inventing new ways to drink away the pain.
