DIY: Liquor Bottle Lighting

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Winter is crappy. The days are short, the nights are dark , long and cold and most of the time it’s hard to convince me into coming out from underneath my giant blanket. While we can’t do much about the direction that the Earth spins, we have the benefit of electricity '“ and DIY liquor bottle lighting. The first step of any craft involving liquor bottles should be obvious: open. Drink liquor. That should solve that pesky 'œcold' problem. Now a day or two later, or whenever your hands are steady, wash out those bottles and add some lighting to your lair.
First up, the easy ones: throw some dollar store holiday lights into an empty wine bottle. There are more complicated ways of accomplishing this task, but why? Runner up: vodka led bottle. This just involves cutting a hole in several bar coasters to make a cubby for the led, then resting the bottle on top of it so adjust this one as needed '“ you could use a book instead or coasters, or whatever’s handy.
Alternatives that up the ante a bit include getting a Cork Stopper Lamp kit to make a Wine Bottle Lamp – it sorta not DIY to buy, but it’s under $15 and I’m no electrician so I won’t be pointing any fingers '“ and the real gem here, Bottle Votives. These actually double as super-cool drinking glasses, but could also be used as vases, pencil holders, etc. You won’t even need a glass cutter (although there are several methods available), just alcohol, string, matches and cold water. (Once you’ve gotten it down, you can get ambitious '“ check the chandelier).
