Holy Ole’s!

If you’re an East Coast transplant living in California, then you’ve probably lamented the lack of greasy spoon diners in the Bay Area (no, Mel’s, IHOP, and Denny’s don’t count, though they are the greasiest).  Well, guess what?  Ole’s Waffle Shop in Alameda is here to fill the gap (with breakfast) in your cold, smoggy hearts.

As you can hopefully see from the picture, Ole’s keeps it real (old). Faded posters of the Oakland Athletics hearken back to their glory days. The orange, vinyl upholstery and stained glass hanging lamps suggest that absolutely nothing has changed for at least 40 years. And that’s just fine, because every good neighborhood staple should hold something sacred.

The food in Ole’s is nothing to write home about, and I mean that in the best possible way. If it’s free range, organic, locally grown ingredients you’re looking for, I suggest you walk on by. Everything on the menu is very  straightforward.  For two eggs, hash browns, and a biscuit, it’ll cost you $5.50.  No strings attached. I dined with one other person, and the grand total after tax and including drinks was $15. Holy crap.

Our server was a total sweetheart. As you might imagine, Ole’s serves many senior citizens who are just looking for a cheap bite and a little small talk. Ole’s provides both, with a smile. Damn, this place almost makes me miss Jersey. Almost.

Mia is a nice Italian girl from an exotic Italian colony called New Jersey.  She studied English Literature and Screenwriting at Drexel University in Philadelphia and has no intention of ever being a teacher.  Instead, she produces low-budget films with her crew/friends, one of which actually won a contest hosted by AMC and judged by Mr. Robert (Rob) Zombie.  She currently lives and loves in beautiful Oakland, California, which, she maintains, is just as great as and even sunnier than San Francisco.
